Ryan Haraughty, an eighth grade science teacher made, not really a dirty joke, but a dirty allusion in class -- by accident, it sounds like -- and got fired for it for creating a "sexually hostile environment," after a parent complained.

Just an extension of the same mindset that produces zero tolerance policies in that it's better to crush the powerless then to appear less then perfect and be the subject of criticism.
It's inappropriate, and I could see a firing for it if that sort of thing happened frequently. But I think they should give the guy another chance; a "sexually hostile environment" is way beyond ONE dopey off-the-cuff comment... I think anyone who has actually BEEN in one could tell you that.
