Teachers and 403(b) Plans

First the LA Times informs us that the unions were pushing bad retirement plans on teachers. Now we find out it's not just the unions.

Teachers, do your homework.

I don't think you can opt out of a state retirement system any more than you can opt out of social security. As they say in the commercials: consult your tax professional :-)

Our planner is on my case as I write this about taking control of my 403B. The problem is that I quit teaching when I was 26 and came back 20 years later. What I have in there is negligible and he will want me to save more. HA! I have another high school senior, which means next year I will be the proud parents of THREE COLLEGE STUDENTS. I wish one of them would graduate soon, but the universities keep changing the degree plans to provide jobs for grad students. Right now my daughter has 110 hours and is looking at at least 30 more. My son has 70 and has at least 50 more. How can they ever get out if the schools keep moving the goal line?
