I'd say working harder is pretty smart.

True. It just annoys me when people give up on their schooling because they can't compete with the elite Asians.

Can't? or won't?

Things are changing in the Asian community. Our population is probably 20% Asian and I would say they run the gamut from hardworking brainiacs to wannabe gangsters. The traditional Asian families still favor education and will insist their children go to college, but we are getting more and more Americanized single parent families where both boys and girls get into the same trouble the other kids do. I think if parents make education a priority and a "given", kids usually will rise to the ocassion. Heck, even my child who hates school is planning on going to college. It constantly amazes me the number of families where that's not a goal. And that's true even in affluent areas. Strange attitude.

Those are matriculation rates, of course. The missing piece is the high dropout rate of students recruited through affirmative action. And of course, the hand wringing liberals are all guilty about it. See here.
