On This Day In History...

...the Nazis met the American soldier face-to-face.  While it didn't go as well as the planners had hoped it would, it still did not go well for the Nazis.

Festung Europa, indeed.

Hadn't they already met in Italy (invaded by British and Americans in September 1943)? ;-)
This isn't to diminish the momentous accomplishment that the Normandy Landing was, mind you.

And in North Africa, yes.

But Italy and North Africa are a lot farther from the Fatherland than Normandy is :-)

Have to agreed about the error in your statement. The Nazi soldier met the American soldier for the first time in a major effort on 19 Feb 43 and kicked some American butt at Kasserine Pass. You didn't add the qualifier until your response above.
