Researchers at Pennsylvania State University tracked the body mass indexes of 19,450 students from fifth through eighth grade...A valuable study for my statistics classes.
No matter how the researchers looked at the data, they could find no correlation at all between obesity and attending a school where sweets and salty snacks were available. link

It Doesn't Fit The Narrative, So No One Will Care
And we'll continue to spend money making school food that kids not only don't want to eat, but food that we force them to take (when they get free school meals) which they then throw away:

Empty carbs, sugary snacks, and processed foods have no redeeming qualities. Even if they can't find a "link," there is no argument against offering healthier choices in schools. Diet is intrinsically linked to health and academic performance. And amping up nutrition should be a priority for the school lunch program.
Make them sit at the table until their vegetables are done...no TV, no dessert, and no feeding the dog. Oh wait, that was my house when I was a kid facing my brussel sprouts.
It doesn't matter how healthy the food is or how much more virtuous the decision-making adults feel, unless the kids will eat it. Apparently, they won't; LAUSD is currently dealing with huge quantities of discarded food and a thriving in-school black market in junk food.
Aw, another lefty issue bites the dust. Too bad lefties are incapable of learning from this lesson.
