More Evidence I'm Getting Old
My son just got his driving permit today :)

I don't know what the age requirement is for CA, but kids in SD can get a licence at 14 (restricted 0600-2200, I think) and an unrestricted one at 15. If they've taken driver ed, which is not required, they don't have to take an on-road test, only the written one. However, even in the cities, most kids learned to drive on farms/ranches of relatives/connections well before that - often as soon as they could reach the pedals and see over the wheel.
