I was off work between Christmas and New Year of 1963 and read it then, so I'm going to guess early 1963(?) because it was a pretty new book and still drawing a lot of attention. FWIW, I think it was--and still is--highly overrated.
1962, "the end of the most immature decade in American history" as I remember learning it.
