Tuesday's Pics of the Day

click on the pictures to enlarge
Chac-Mool (foreground) and Kukulcan (the snake heads at the top of the stairs on the platform in the background).

Depictions of Kukulcan are everywhere.

This is what everyone thinks of when they hear Chichen Itza, the step pyramid dedicated to Kukulcan. On the left (west) side you can see that it has been somewhat restored; on the right (south) side it has not been. Even if every rock were in place the restoration would not be complete; the Maya painted their pyramids. This one was red.

If only I'd had more time....

Were you able to go inside the pyramid?

See the fences/barriers in each picture? No one is allowed in or on any of the ruins. Can you believe people would write graffiti on them?

Wow, that sucks. When I went there, we climbed up one side, down the other, and went inside the pyramid. There's a really long, really narrow, really stuffy staircase that leads up to a central room with another rendition of the Chac-Mool guy made out of jade. It was pretty cool.

Maybe on your next trip to Mexico, you can go to central Mexico and see Teotihuacan. You can climb the pyramid of the sun there.
