Well, the earlier hippies circa 1966 were indeed pretty civilized..but unfortunately, their was nothing in their philosophy to keep it from just going off the deep end, which it did. At first they coasted along off people's normal good nature and (at the time) and in a couple years the bums, speed freaks and true anarchists took over. The hippie "church" was built upon sand.
