With the signing of Wisconsin's new law limiting public employee union activities, the TA's at the University of Wisconsin-Madison will not seek recertification of their union as the legal representative of the TA's. Hidden amongst all the other rhetoric is
this tidbit, which is truly where the rubber hits the road, where you separate the wheat from the chaff, where we see how dedicated the "members" are to the ideal of union membership:
The union faces challenges as it adjusts to the limits imposed by the state law. Under the old contract, union dues were automatically deducted from the paychecks of the 2,700-2,800 graduate teaching assistants at Madison. Now the Teaching Assistants’ Association must seek dues from members by itself.
I'm curious to see how this works out.
