Teenagers, Sleep, and School Start Time

I, for one, wouldn't mind an extra hour or so of sleep in the morning. And I'm usually in bed by 10 and get plenty of sleep.

Parents: "Start the school day later!"
Schools: "Make your kids go to bed earlier the night before!"

The debate rages on

I teach at a high school where classes start at 8:45-I still have kids that show up late due to oversleeping. My son attends a nearby high school where classes start at 7:30. The tardies and absentees are at similar levels. I do think my own son functions better later in the day, but then again, if kids are allowed to work until midnight on a school night, or party until three or watch Conan O'Brien, then should they really be complaining when they themselves haven't taken the actions required to get rest? If they don't learn it by high school, then most of them will crash and burn by the end of the first semester of college.
