Attacking Teachers Unions

Randi Winegarten, newly elected president of the American Federation of Teachers, had this to say recently:

On Monday, Weingarten said that when people attack teachers unions, they are attacking teachers who stay up late to prepare lessons, spend their own money on school equipment, or spend weekends at debate competitions away from their families.

There is no way around it--that statement is a total lie. Teachers unions, especially at the state and national levels, are political entities, created and sustained by legalized extortion. That they hide behind teachers while going about their political business makes them even more disgusting.

Randi, you're either a liar or a fool--and neither speaks well of you.

Once again, the unions assume the sole position as the spokespersons for teachers. Unions don't speak for me nor will they ever. I have to pay them, I don't have to allow them to tell who to vote for and who to give money to.

What do you expect a union president to say?

"Yup, teachers are just people and some of us are good and some of us suck but as the union president and don't give a good G-d about that. I'm here to get the best deal I can for my members and if that means crappy teachers keep working, that's not my problem, that's management's problem."

Is that what you'd like to hear?

Don't hold your breath then because it isn't going to happen. Here's the worst part though; you can't even be sure you're right when you accuse the union prez of lying. He may believe every last thing he says.

Heck, there are people who comment regularly on this blog who are entirely certain the socialism works just fine the mountains of evidence to the contrary not bothering them a bit. So it's not like you have to go very far to find examples of people who believe sincerely in the manifestly untrue.

Unions are natural phenomena, like the weather. They occur when the conditions are conducive to their formation and they dissipate when those conditions change.

If it makes you feel any better the weather forecast is for fewer unions in general with a cool trend hitting government employee unions, medium to long term.

Watch "Stupid in America" with John Stossel. He gives you a good eyeful of Randi Weingarten. That woman makes my skin crawl.
