I got to school early today, and shortly before the 1st period bell I took a walk around. We have almost 2000 students enrolled, and the halls and quads were teeming with teenagers.
For the first time in a year and a half, the campus looked like a school and not a park. It was quite nice.
You know what wasn't nice? Damn near having to yell to be heard at the back of class over my 'rona-burqa.
We had our freshman orientation yesterday, which ended in a club fair (where students could learn about all of the student clubs). It was great seeing them act like kids. I hope the federal government doesn't start threatening to withhold funds to bend our state (SC) to its will.
ReplyDeleteHaving teachers masked is going to make teaching primary ages almost impossible. How do students learn to voice words? The teacher models the pronunciation. For students with hearing disabilities, speech impediments or other disorders, this is going to hold them back. I'm sorry but I see no reason for this other than creating a visual signal of compliance. Here's one of my sources, it's long, but very complete: https://bit.ly/3iCCfh9
ReplyDeleteObedience uber alles.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you do for deaf students who read lips?
ReplyDeleteI haven't encountered that yet, Steve, but *I* ask students to let *me* see their lips when they speak--otherwise I have no idea what they're saying.
