Rocklin High School in Rocklin, California, placed a teacher on paid administrative leave after she let students discuss the politics of the National School Walkout, which took place around the country yesterday morning. If she said or did something inappropriate, that would be a different story. But until I hear what else she might have said or done, it's not hard to believe the story as told at the link.
Julianne Benzel told CBS13 that she suspects she got in trouble for suggesting that schools administrators who condoned the student walkout might be practicing a double standard.
"And so I just kind of used the example which I know it's really controversial, but I know it was the best example I thought of at the time," said Benzel. "[If] a group of students nationwide, or even locally, decided 'I want to walk out of school for 17 minutes' and go in the quad area and protest abortion, would that be allowed by our administration?"
Joanne has a great post on this same topic here.
Our sophomore refused to participate, in a school where probably around 5 students balked, and where a poll before the 2016 election showed that 97% of students wanted Bernie (95% of parents did).
ReplyDeleteOur kid was questioned several times why he wasn't participating, and he said it was pointless symbolism and didn't accomplish anything. One teacher said in response: "are you *for* gun violence?!"
No pressure, no pressure.
The only reason that this teacher was not fired is because of a union negotiated contract requiring just cause. If the unions disappear or become too weak to negotiate for just cause requirements, liberal administrators will jump on the chance to get rid of teachers that they suspect of being conservatives. If you think that liberals will keep on conservative teachers out of the goodness of their hearts, you are naive.
ReplyDelete28 states currently have right-to-work laws and unions haven't disappeared. You can let go of your pearls.
ReplyDeleteBut since you want to toss insults, allow me to join in: if you think *only* unions can do this, you're clueless.
