Costa Concordia

In this 45-second time-lapse video you can watch the entire 19-hour operation to right the damaged ship.  Very cool--it's clear why marine engineers and naval architects are among the highest paid of all college majors!

The cost of the raising is being put at $800 million which seems like an awful lot of money for a ship that's just going to be broken up. I wonder what led whoever it was who made the decision to go with a re-floating, dangerous and expensive, over breaking the ship up where it sat?

  2. Allen,

The ship is in the middle of the largest marine wildlife refuge in the Mediterranean. Breaking it up in place would release too many harmful chemicals (lubricants, cooking oils, grease, etc.), rotten food, & whatnot into the local water. Therefore, they elected to do it this way.
