World War I started in 1914 and official U.S. involvement started in 1915 with the sinking of the Lusitania. Though I believe it took many months for official action to be taken.
However, many "Yanks" fought with the Royal Flying Corps and with the Lafayette Escadrille of the French Air Force before any official U.S. involvement.
World War I started in 1914. The U.S. entered the war in 1917, but didn't really start doing any fighting until 1918.
