The answer to yesterday's question is:
Greater than 1. The American Civil War was, to a month, 4 years long, whereas American fighting in WWII took place from December 1941 to August 1945, a period of less than 4 years.
Today's question is:
When the Roman Empire was split into Eastern and Western halves, what city became the capital of the Eastern half?
Constantinople
ReplyDeleteConstantinople
ReplyDeleteByzantium, which was renamed Constantinople to honor the Roman emperor Constantine
ReplyDeleteThe city of the Emperor Constantine, or Constantinople.
ReplyDelete(Which of course is now Istanbul...)
The emperor Theodosius split the empire for good in 395. Constantinople became the Eastern Roman Empire's capital city.
ReplyDeleteConstantinople.
ReplyDeleteDon't agree with your answer to the Tuesday Trivia. I can accept your definition for the length of the Civil War although I believe that it started with the firing on the Star of the West which was trying to resupply Fort Sumter on 9 January 1861. However, you specifically asked for American combat in World War II, not the length of the declared war. Americans were in combat long before Pearl Harbor. Just ask any American on a ship in the Atlantic in 1940. Likewise, ask a soldier or sailor in China whether they were caught in combat during the Sino-Japanese War which is commonly accepted to be the start of WWII in the Pacific.
I think your justification is quite weak based on how you asked your question.
Constantinople.
ReplyDeleteSteve, as for the WWII question, how would you recommend that I word the question in order to make my answer accurate?

ReplyDeleteConstantinople.
ReplyDeleteDarren, to get to the answer you justified, you would have to use something less nebulous then "American combat." I've thought about it and any wording gets difficult when trying to ensure you only use the declared war length. Possibly words to the effect: The state of war length of the Civil War versus WWII. "State of War" being what the President asks for in permission from Congress to declare war ala Roosevelt in 1941.
