No Budget, No Cal Grants

The major Sacramento newspaper reports:

Some 335,500 students going to California colleges this fall have qualified for Cal Grants because their family incomes are so low. They need the grants to pay tuition, buy books or cover basic living expenses.

But without a budget for the 2010-11 year, the state is not sending out any Cal Grants.

You know what? I'm not even going to comment on that. Not yet, anyway.

Surely some big-hearted philanthropists could chip in...lots of very rich people down there in some very lucrative industries. Or maybe Boxer or Pelosi or even Schwarzenegge could cough up some pocket change for these poor folks.
Don't they care about the children?!

It's ok, federal aid was denied to me the day tuition was due, when they approved me 2 months ago. I now need $9000 by next month

  3. Welcome to the world of the middle class. Middle class families have had to deal for years with a FAFSA system that listed them as too rich for financial aide, but not rich enough to afford college without taking out thousands of dollars in personal loans. It used to drive me crazy that my kids had to work full time while in college, while scholarshipped students who were given a free education often wasted the opportunity by not going to class. I saw this when I was a student, and I saw this when my kids were students. We need to stop giving scholarships based on what looks good politically and start basing scholarships on academic merit. This would alleviate many applicants for grants because they would already have a merit based scholarship.
