An Exceptional Quote

Here's a quote I just read on another blog:

It's OK to be charitable with your own money. It's not so virtuous to be generous with other people's money.

This quote applies equally well to government and to the CTA, despite the topic's being neither of those two areas.

  2. Welcome :-)

How did you find my little corner of the internet?

  3. I was digging around for the French quote about the L.A. riots. I remembered it well, but couldn't recall the exact words or the exact personage who said it. There is nothing quite like Humble Pie prepared in a French Patisserie! There is another tasty slice posted here; http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/08/AR2005110801109.html

  4. Either that, Walter, or believes that there's no virtue in using *other people's money* instead of your own as a gift to others.

I hope you were being facetious.

  5. I have a vague memory that President Jackson said a similar thing about 175 years ago. The issue was brought before Congress that the widow of some solider was in dire straights and they wished to allocate some of the Federal budget to help her out. The response was this is not what the federal government was supposed to do. Then Davy Crocket went on to say that he would be happy to donate to a collection to help the widow out.

Bran Ferren says the internet is a memory extender. I used Google and tracked down this account:

of the incident. It is very powerful.

And I happened across your blog via one of your postings being in this week's Carnival of Education.

  6. Henry Cate: welcome! Hope you come back periodically.

And Walter, based on your previous writings, I was pretty sure you were, in fact, being facetious. Still, I thought it best not to assume.
