CBS Television Studios announced today it will launch a totally new Star Trek television series in January 2017. The new series will blast off with a special preview broadcast on the CBS Television Network. The premiere episode and all subsequent first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access, the Network's digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service.I like Star Trek as much as the next guy--remember, I kicked in $25 to make Axanar--but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay $6 a month to watch Star Trek. Big Bang Theory is free! What the heck! I don't have cable, satellite, or Dish--I get my TV the old-fashioned way, over the air. If cable didn't have commercials I could understand why someone who watches a lot of tv might choose to pay for it, but even cable tv has commercials now! I get nice HD broadcasts over-the-air so there's no way I'm going to pay for television. Already I've had to give up Monday Night Football because it's no longer on ABC, but ESPN....
The next chapter of the Star Trek franchise will also be distributed concurrently for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International.
The new program will be the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS's current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.
Bad call, CBS, bad call.
Update, 11/5/15: This pic on Twitter says it all.

ReplyDeleteGood thing I'm not a Vulcan, however much I admire Commander/Captain Spock.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, T'Pol was *much* hotter than T'Pring :)
Cable is dying. And they know it. We sometimes use my son's Netflix account to watch movies, but we're really enjoying a wide range of programming on broadcast networks. GRIT, LAFF, MeTV, Antenna , Movies!, plus all the additional stations outside the normal range of local news and programming are more than enough. Plus, I like some of the old shows and movies they have on there and the theme weeks.
