Police say a student at the University of California at Berkeley has been arrested and charged with using his cell phone to secretly record a fellow student in a dormitory bathroom.
UC Berkeley Police said Monday 20-year-old Alfredo Mendez has been charged by Alameda County prosecutors with invading a person's privacy, a misdemeanor.
Police say the 20-year-old student was arrested Thursday following a complaint by a UC Berkeley female student who saw him using his cell phone to record inside a co-ed restroom she was using.
The 19-year-old student told police she noticed a cell phone "extended underneath the stall partition with the camera facing up."
Police say she exited the stall and waited for the suspect to leave the adjacent stall. When the male suspect exited, the victim recognized the suspect as a resident on their floor. link

Another Sicko
Is it just me, or do others also believe that you cannot simultaneously support this type of living arrangement and believe that so-called rape culture exists in our universities?
Might be just you. Same pervert could have just snuck in to a woman's bathroom. His crime, and rape, are entirely different.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know those dorms. I lived in them; they were the cheapest, for one thing. They'd originally been men's dorms and so only had one bathroom per floor, with some stalls and showers. The showers were built so spying was extremely difficult, but the stalls were just ordinary.
ReplyDeleteIt was considered polite for only one sex to use the bathroom at a time--if a woman was in there, a man wouldn't go in and vice-versa. Usually if people wanted to get up to something--showering together for example--they'd go to a different floor and try not to be seen, because it was rude. This guy is quite the idiot as well as a criminal.
You're right about the rape culture dichotomy. The co-ed dorms thing goes back to...I'm not sure, the 80s maybe? Longer? Certainly it dates from the days when students were insisting that they were adults and could perfectly well handle living co-ed. I wonder if anybody is thinking of insisting that co-ed dorms disappear in the name of protecting the fragile women from the evil predatory men.
I lived on a floor of mostly men. On the whole, they were fine neighbors.
