College is too late, writes New York Times columnist Frank Bruni in response to President Obama’s call for free community college in the State of the Union speech. Subsidizing tuition won’t help if students aren’t ready to do college-level work. And Common Core isn't going to get students ready to do college-level math anyway:
"The speaker is Jason Zimba, one of the three drafters of the Common Core math standards. The questioner is Dr. Sandra Stotsky. This exchange took place at a meeting of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education on March 23, 2010. As you will hear, Dr. Zimba admits not only that the CC math standards aren't designed to prepare students for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) studies, but also that they're not designed to get a student into any selective college, even in a non-STEM discipline."
But that's not what they've been Grubering!
ReplyDeleteFrom the Common Core website itself, www.corestandards.org:
What is important to keep in mind is that the progression in the Common Core is mathematically coherent and leads to college and career readiness at an internationally competitive level.
But wait! Here's more!
ReplyDeleteBut scores aren't important...they just have to UNDERSTAND math, not actually do it!
ReplyDeleteAnd English is about SELF EXPRESSION, not clarity of expression, logical thinking, all supported by good grammar.
Geez, Darren, you'd know this if you lived in a state like Calif---oh, wait, you do! Never mind, then.
Who is that guy who keeps chasing me down, and why is he carrying Kool Aid?
ReplyDeleteAs a college freshmen already in advanced business and economics classes, I would not be successful if not for being pushed hard in high school upper division math classes. The common core will screw over thousands of students and crush their college/professional dreams. How unfortunate that the liberals appear to be against dreamers. "What do you want to be when your grow up?... oh, an astronaut, a ceo, a doctor, an archaeologist? I'm sorry, you can't, you don't have the math skills to successfully get you there in a timely matter. Thank your government, the unemployment office is down the street."
