A tenured professor who forced her students to sign pledges that they would vote for President Barack Obama last November should be fired, the college’s president recommended.
Sharon Sweet, an associate professor of mathematics at Brevard Community College in Florida, is guilty of electioneering, harassment, and incompetence, according to a three-month investigation into her classroom behavior leading up to the November election.
The Board of Trustees will hold a hearing on the matter, and then vote on whether to adopt President James Richey’s recommendation that Sweet be fired.
Education, politics, and anything else that catches my attention.

Give Her The Axe
This is remarkable on a couple different levels:
The students at ratemyprofessor.com seem to concur.
ReplyDeleteThe electioneering bullying goes back almost six months or more. There seem to be long standing questions as to her basic competence,(supported by the investigation).
ReplyDeleteThe real question is how did this political activist get on the tenure track in the first place? And why did it take something this egregious to prod the administration to action?
Because if it's not a problem for the administration it's not a problem.
ReplyDeleteOnce her electioneering went public she did become a problem for the administration which was forced to make the decision to circle the wagons or give her the boot.
Given the brevity of the entire episode I can only conclude that there factors even beyond competence and poor judgment that led to her firing. I'm going to guess that this behavior has gone on for far longer then just the timeframe referenced, which would be a lot tougher for the school to explain away, and that the school chose to turn a deaf ear to complaints until they became public knowledge.
