Become A Member of the Weather Stasi

In the former East Germany, the Stasi was the name of the secret police. There were everywhere and knew everything--mostly because they found ways to get people to spy and/or report on their neighbors.

This organization wants you to report on your weatherman:
“This is an important moment in the history of the AMS,” said Daniel Souweine, the campaign’s director. “It’s well known that large numbers of meteorologists are climate change deniers. It’s essential that the AMS Council resist pressure from these deniers and pass the strong statement currently under consideration.”
Interesting that they admit that large numbers of meteorologists are climate change "deniers". Why do you think that might be?

If your weatherman was a 'greeny environmentalist wacko kook anthropogenic global warming alarmist' would you report on him?

I guess you would. Just sayin'

They are skeptics (a better term than the negatively-connoted "denier") because they can do the math, rather than just believe things like Souweine and others for whom ideology trumps the scientific process.

  3. Well, Shoe, just goes to show what an idiot you are. I wouldn't "report" anyone for something like that. If I had a Congressman who thought like that I might make his views known and vote against him, but a weatherman can't really affect me like a congressman can--the weather's gonna get warmer or colder no matter what the weatherman says.

  4. Shoe, just curious, who would Darren report the weatherman to?

Also, global cooling, err global warming, excused me, climate change pushers often have no background in real science. Classic example, ALGORE. Is it curious to you weathermen who have meteorological degrees question the snake oil of the ALGORE.

    MikeAT,

He'd report it to none other than The Anthony Watts ™ himself.

    Who cares what ALGORE thinks.

  6. No Shoe, I would flip the channel to another weatherman. If enough folks do the same, ratings go down and the station will find another, less political weatherman.

Folks watch the weather to make plans for next weekend or determine what to wear to work the next day. Any weatherman who pontificates one way or another about Climate Change (or current nom du jour) will not last long in today's cut throat local news markets.

Steve got there ahead of me.

Entertainers, among whom I put TV weathermen their meteorology degrees notwithstanding, from time to time, conclude that their relative fame is a call to action on their part to elevate a too-unelevated public.

Sometimes they can get away with it but other times, and Ellen DeGeneres comes to mind as an example, they don't. When their hectoring becomes sufficiently tiresome we vote with our channel-changing thumb and in a short while the problems solved.
