The Americans assassinated him. They'd cracked the Japanese code and knew where he'd be.
He was riding in a Japanese bomber out to an island group in the SW Pacific, but his bomber was shot down by intercepting American P-38 Lightnings.
His plane was ambushed by USN fighter pilots.
Shot down by a squadron of P-38 Lightnings during an inspection tour as his transport was flying over Bougainville Island.
