He was called Chief Joseph, of what we term the Nez Percez. I don't know his name or his tribe's names in his own language.

After one of the most brilliant fighting retreats in history, and a mere 30 miles shy of the Canadian-American border (and freedom, for a bit), Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians surrendered to General Nelson Miles.
I about wrote "Chief Joseph" ... then thought that couldn't be right, but then checked, and yes it is.
