This page includes both stories I've heard about Davy Crockett--that he wouldn't vote for a pension for an admiral's widow because it wasn't an appropriate expenditure of the public's money, and his meeting a constituent who wasn't pleased that he voted to allot $20,000 in assistant to victims of a fire in Georgetown.
Conservatism in our government is all but lost today.
I agree with that - Of course, the problem is people keep waiting for conservatism to come from the Republicans. However, they have shown such an inability to govern - and a confusion about the difference between 1980 and 2000 - and a lack of knowledge about the conditions of 1930 - and a misunderstanding of conservatism that leads to libertarian populism - that I look less for conservatism in the GOP than I do with the Democrats these days.
ReplyDeleteSidenote: The actor who played Davy Crockett in the Disney series, Fess Parker, died yesterday (the day of your post).
ReplyDeleteMazenko, you may look for conservatism from one or two Democrats, as you may from a few Republicans, but if you look for it in the PelOsi-Obama-Reid (POOR) Democratic Party, your reasoning leaves something to be desired.
ReplyDeleteSteve, I got the link in the post from an article about Parker's death.
I concur, Darren.
ReplyDeleteThese days I look for conservative Democrats - certainly not Pelosi or Reid - because they will have the knowledge and willingness to govern.
For example, here in Colorado there are people like Joe Rice or Andrew Romanoff who will make the choice to govern. By contrast the GOP offers up people who want to govern from the Bible or cut taxes so much that Colorado Springs can't afford streetlights.
Hence, you can see my support for conservative Democrats. Though a moderate Republican - like Don Marostica - would always get my vote. Sadly, the GOP is moving in the opposite direction.
