You're Too Stupid To Know What's Good For You...

...and I, the Nanny State, am going to tell you what's good for you.

Gillespie is correct--requiring each of us to pay for everyone's health care makes your lifestyle decisions and my lifestyle decisions everyone else's business. That's not a society in which I want to live. "I don't think it should be a public matter whether or not I had a Big Mac today or...I went to some kind of health food store."

The blond antagonist in the video believes that too many parents don't know what's best for their kids and hence "the government" should step in. If that good intention isn't another paving stone on the road to Hell, I don't know what is. Gillespie hits the nail on the head--there are certain people who "know" what's best for all of us and they want to boss us around. I don't want to let them.

That's why I'm not a socialist.

I wonder if the the antogonist has children, and if she does, do they go to a public school where they are weighed in the morning.

Clearly there are those present in our society who want to use the state as a means of income. I'm sure her organization, like many that service schools, recieves grant monies from government. In pursuing the largesse of the government they are undermining our system of liberty.

There is probably a minority of non-profit type people who genuinely want to use government as a tool of social change. These people are no better than the fascists who ran Italy, Germany, and Japan. However righteous their cause may seem they are taking the very same actions as the aforesaid governments, namely the seduction of children minds into accepting that the state, not their parents, knows what is best for them.

  2. Whatever happened to "my body, my choice"? Or does that only apply to killing your kids?

In my 1st year college English class, we just read an entire essay making the same point Gillespie does here (public health= my money goes to your health, so I get to decide what your health problems are). Upon discussion, the students seemed to realize that they didn't want people like me (or the blonde in this segment) forcing them to make healthy choices in lifestyle, food, etc.

So many bad ideas for government mission creep seem to start out with, "but it's for the children!"

  4. I wish I could have seen the video, but apparently it has been "removed due to a terms of use violation" - whatever that is. I do not want these crazy people telling me how to manage my health OR the health of my loved ones. I doubt anyone even knew we were in a health care crisis before this administration brought it up. Now, nobody knows we're still at war, because we never hear anything about it.

As far as public schools weighing children, I don't know if our local schools do that, but we get hammered on our weight and BMI's at every turn. I received Wii Fit Plus for my birthday last month. Our 12 y/o daughter uses it and is constantly told she is "At Risk of Overweight" - even though I doubt the accuracy (it has told me I have lost or gained 3.5 pounds in one day).

So, if a kid has a high BMI, is the government going to step in and put the kid in a concentration camp so they'll lose weight? Ridiculous.
