A Teacher's View of the Job of Administrators

A fellow teacher told me this today, and it makes a lot of sense:

Administrators only have to do two things--make it so I can do my job, and make sure I do my job.

And one of the worst characteristics of the district system is the inevitable overabundance of administrative/non-teaching professionals.

The centralized nature of the district system guarantees a top-heavy administration once the per student budget exceeds the minimum necessary to pay the teachers. After all, what are you going to do with all that "extra" money? There really is nothing else to do with it but hire non-teaching professionals.

  2. I'm with you on that, Darren. Here's a great story about an administrator doing exactly that at a formerly struggling, but quickly improving lower socioeconomic high school in Denver.
