Are You Smarter Than A Supercomputer?

Right idea, wrong game show.

I.B.M. plans to announce Monday that it is in the final stages of completing a computer program to compete against human “Jeopardy!” contestants. If the program beats the humans, the field of artificial intelligence will have made a leap forward.

  3. How is this a giant leap forward? It's just like connecting a speech recognition module/search engine to a (checked-for-accuracy) version of Wikipedia?

I'm still waiting to see one that can pass the Turing test.

Then again, I've met humans I'm not sure would pass the Turing test.

  4. When IBM launched the world's first disk storage product (the RAMAC) in 1958, they demoed it at the World's Fair by having it answer world history questions in 10 languages.

Total RAMAC storage capacity was about 4 megabytes.
