Washington state law does not bar teachers from having sex with 18-year-old students.
That's the decision of a three-judge panel of the Washington Court of Appeals, which on Tuesday ordered the dismissal of a case brought against Hoquiam High School's former choir teacher.
Maybe the joke would be funnier if the teacher taught economics.
Given the dubious history of teachers at my school, I was aghast to overhear a bouncy new teacher show her concern for a failing student by giving him her cell phone number and telling him when she would be home over the weekend. How can I tell her that she has to set up some boundaries? How can I tell him?
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing about a teacher shortage. Maybe this ruling will boost enrollment in teaching programs. And just think of the recruiting potential! I can see the Help Wanted ads now: "Come work at XYZ district where 50% of our seniors are over 18!"
ReplyDeleteGaaah! I live in WA, and I'm glad I home school. How about barring teachers from having sex with ALL students? Physicians are barred from such relationships with patients. I see a parallel situation here.
