So-Called Fairness Doctrine

Here's one view that says that a President Obama will not try to impose the so-called "fairness doctrine" directly--but will impose it nonetheless.

"Alinsky jujitsu" as applied to conservative talk radio means using vague rules already on the books to threaten any station which dares to air conservative programs with the loss of its valuable broadcast license.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule in question is called "localism." Radio and television stations are required to serve the interests of their local community as a condition of keeping their broadcast licenses.

Obama needs only three votes from the five-member FCC to define localism in such a way that no radio station would dare air any syndicated conservative programming.

I don't see this going gently into the night.

“gently into the night.” More like lawsuits left and right, filibusters in the congress and if worse comes to worse, radio goes to internet broadcasting.

But as long as we’re discussing it how about this:

    1. A “Fairness Doctrine” for universities. We want “diversity” right…let’s have a little diversity of opinion.

    2. A “Fairness Doctrine” for ABC/NBC/CBS/MSMBC/CNN/FOX. I especially want this…if those networks cover a Democratic or leftist group press conference they must cover a Republican or conservative group press conference. Fair, right?

    3. A “Fairness Doctrine” for book stores. If they want to put Rush Limbaugh or Bill O’Reilly in the fiction area, how about putting “My American Life” there….B Hussein Obama won’t mind will he?

    4. A “Fairness Doctrine” for PBS. I call them out specifically because unlike the networks listed in #2, I have no choice in supporting them.

    5. A “Fairness Doctrine” for public schools period. If you want to call America a racist nation because of slavery, how about being forced to at the point of loosing you job tell students the greatness of the Abolition movement…or the fact over Six Hundred Thousand men died in the Civil War over slavery.

    6. How could I have forgotten! A “Fairness Doctrine” for NY Izvestia, err New York Times, US Pravda, err USA Today, Washington Compost, Atlanta Urinal and Constipation, etc. When even the Ombudsman of the Compost is saying they were in the tank for B Hussein Obama you know it’s bad.

If it’s good for the goose…

... then you can damned well bet the goose will try to hang onto it and the gander can see to his own devices.

  4. Rush had a hard time getting his career started because local radio stations didn't want a program that wasn't focused around local interests. He was forced to divide his time between the show he really wanted and a show specifically catered to the interests of his local audience. But soon he found that radio stations from far away wanted him to run his show, and he was able to get around the localism limitation.

But there was no FCC involvement there, as far as I know; only the threat of it. I don't know what will happen in the age to come.

p.s. I'll get back to you on the global warming thing, I'm a bit tied up now. To summarize, though: I don't know whether I'll be able to show you anything you haven't seen before; probably not, in fact, because I think that most people on both sides of the debate are pretty well informed and know what the evidence is, but people vary in the way they interpret it.

  5. So does this mean that MSNBC,PBS and CNN will have to allow Rush and Hannity to air on an equal footing with Olberman and other liberal hacks? And how will that weigh in with the crossover from "news" to "sports?" Frankly, this is a can of worms nobody should want opened.
