“I have bitched and moaned for years about the lack of tolerance in the elitist wing of the Democratic Party, or what I refer to as the ‘Metropolitan Opera Wing.’ These are the people who talk of tolerance but the only true tolerance they ever exhibit is for their own pseudo-intellectual arrogance,” the then-Edwards adviser proclaimed in his typical profanity-peppered prose on Time magazine’s Swampland blog.

If James Carville didn't have a history of political campaigning, his admission to having guns along with his Cajun speech patterns would cause the likes of Obama and the other Ivy League Democrats to cringe. Part of the antipathy for President Bush is political, but I am willing to bet that more of it is regional/status related. There are folks who hear a southern accent or a Texas accent and immediately think that the person is stupid. That's fine with me, it makes it all the easier to catch them when they aren't looking.
ReplyDeleteBush has made a political career of lowering expectations and then exceeding them in the elections. There is a bias about accents. In the movie Sweet Home Alabama it was said, "I may talk slow, but I ain't stupid." That about sums it up.
