There's a fine balance between keeping kids engaged and going over the top. I have heard similar stories including one in a local district where the students were reading Huckleberry Finn and the N-word was scrawled on the board by the teacher to spur discussion. A student took offense and the teacher lost her job. There are just better ways to do things than hitting kids over the head literally or figuratively. If someone at the college level signed off on this lesson plan, they need a major dose of reality.
