While the second amendment was written primarily to protect the people from the government, the writer makes a good case for the right to bear arms as a means of lessoning the chances of being attacked. A more direct, and recent, connection between racism and gun control is the result of the Ossian Sweet trial.
Much state-level gun purchase, carry and ownership restrictions date from the same period when the Ku Klux Klan was powerful enough to elect mayors, governors and senators.
