New Orleans Needs More Teachers

Let me see if I understand this correctly. A doomed and corrupt city reelects an incompetent mayor--and they want people like me to flock there to teach? Oh heyall no!

Wanted: Idealistic teachers looking for a Peace Corps-style adventure in a city in distress.

    LOL

I'm with you...and why on earth do they want to rebuild this place?
It was a MESS before Katrina!

There is something sick, yet compelling about New Orleans. I have relatives who live there, and after Katrina, they fled to a mid-sized northern city to live with relatives who supported them for a time.

Interestingly, the citizens of that city opened their arms and hearts to them, and within days, they were given good jobs in a variety of local businesses, even bought homes and established new lives to replaced the homes and lives that no longer existed. Yet after a short time, the bayou called them home, home to nothing.

New Orleans was famous for poor and corrupt schools prior to Katrina. Yeah. I want to teach there now. But if you like chocolate, it's the place to be!

Yes there is a certain kind of soul in New Orleans. Especially if you read the bios of people like Fats Domino or Louis Armstrong, or any histories from the 17th and 18th centuries. It's always been *bad* there, but in real terms that means decadence, drug abuse, promiscuity.

I think it would be best if most of the 9th ward just dissipate into the rest of the country, see how the other half live, and maybe pull themselves up by their bootstraps once and for all.

We have all the great music on CD now anyway.

I lived in Metarie when I was a kid. Frankly I think that much of the "magic" of NOLA has been made up for a willing media. NOLA has been a mess for decades. The city and state government were and probably are corrupt. Graft is common. The failure of the levees points right at archaic levee board that used federal funds for golf courses over maintenance. In short, why would ANYONE want to live there. Plus now it's PC to have the Ninth Ward rebuilt. Never mind that it was swampland and never mind that no matter how high the levee goes, the Ninth Ward will always be the first to flood. Talk about throwing good money after bad.
