  2. Amazingly, my Canadian husband, who has been in the USA less than a year, got 10 out of 10. It's a good thing I did too or I'd never hear the end of it from him. *grin*

  3. It was the one about the northern colony, wasn't it, Phyllis? :-)

    I got 9 out of 10. I'll consider that pretty close given that I'm a Brit :-).

It doesn't say which one I got wrong, though...

  5. I wouldn't know, Krill--I got them all right so I don't know what it would tell those of you who got answers incorrect :-) 9/10 isn't bad for a limey, though. I'd probably get one or two similar questions wrong on a test of British government and history.

OK, enough gloating over something that any US 8th grader SHOULD be able to do well on.

...but, sadly, probably wouldn't (not trying to take swing here or anything, just an honest assessment, unfortunately).

One thing I guess I should be clear on as for being a limey: I don't consider it a justifiable excuse for not knowing. I choose to live here, which places on me a responsibility to know or find out if I don't. I'll promise this: I'll be dammed sure my kids know this stuff long before they're in 8th grade... I think they'd probably do quite well right now actually (daughter going into 2nd grade, son going into 6th grade next week).

Incidentally, we've just got back from a vacation in Virginia, where we toured a whole bunch of interesting historical sites including Jefferson's house at Monticello (not to mention innumerable civil war sites - Manassas battlefield is well worth a visit...)

    Regards
    Krill

  7. Manassas *is* worth a visit. I went there about 10 years ago. I took my son to the Gettysburg and Fredericksburg battlefields, as well as DC, last summer while visiting a friend and his family.

And notice I put "should" in all caps. I know full well that most 8th graders probably don't know those answers.
