Cosmic Convergence: Science Fiction and Free Speech

I remember reading about this when it happened; this video is a good summary of events.

I'm glad there was plenty of emphasis on FIRE because the suggestion that the SciFi community consists of unreconstructed constitutional originalists is a bunch of crap.

Even the libertarian streak that runs through the community is conditional on a dearth of dreary reality. When faced with reality many scuttle back to the safety of mother government despite claims to sturdy individuality. Standing on your own, two feet is fine just as long as it's not too uncomfortable or dangerous or boring.

Fortunately, there seems to be a rising awareness that libertarian sentiments make demands that watching reruns of Firefly just doesn't fulfill. That's why I was so pleased with the amount of time given to FIRE and its efforts. It's important for science fiction fans to realize that we're only tourists in the future and that the present is where we live.
