I believe she was raised in 1861, and then she was renamed the C.S.S. Virginia.

CSS Virginia. But that didn't flow well in the papers so the battle was headlined as being between the "Monitor and the Merrimack."

The Merrimack became CSS Virginia. Any Civil War geek should know that!
