Teachers Apparently Start Leftist Uprising

From CNN.com:

OAXACA, Mexico (AP) -- Federal police in riot gear and armored cars took up positions on the outskirts of this southern Mexican city on Sunday, as leftist protesters who have taken charge of the streets stood firm at their barricades of tree trunks and hijacked trucks.

Teachers, whose strike over pay raises in May began the uprising in Oaxaca, agreed to go back to work on Monday, and the federal presence appeared designed to bolster law and order ahead of their return. But some strikers and their leftist supporters were outlining plans for street-by-street resistance.

From this article, though, comes the best reason ever for the 2nd Amendment, and it comes from a Mexican housewife. Referring to the Federales:

"They're going to kill us. It's not fair," said Juana Garcia, a 48-year-old housewife. "We can't do anything, we have no weapons."

Gun control advocates, take note. Tyler, take note.

The teachers' union in Oaxaca goes on strike every every year. This has been happening for more than 20 consecutive years. The aren't paid the best, but do receive Christmas bonuses worth three-months salary. The teachers' union is somewhat split, according to Spanish-language stories I've read. The leadership, however, has been mandating that all teachers stay off the job.

It's worth pointing out the Oaxaca governor, whose head the teachers and other protesters are calling for, comes from an old-school PRI that is very corrupt. Some of his dirty deeds are catching up with him.

anonymous, I'd think you'd have learned by now. If you can't be civil here in the online equivalent of my house, you're not welcome here.

I don't see that quote by the housewife in the linked article. Am I just missing it or is that link to a different article?

I will say that you have an excellent point. I'll respond more if you're able to find me the article that quote came from so I can read the whole thing. Thanks.

Sorry. I posted that four or five times. I couldn't seem to figure it out. Feel free to delete all but one of those as well as this one. Just out of curiosity, what did anonymous say?

Tyler, you're right. The story at the link has been changed. When I cut/pasted/posted it, it was Sunday, and the protesters were waiting for the riot police to move in on Monday. Now that it's Monday, apparently the story has been updated.

I typed the final sentence of the quote into Yahoo and came up with several URLs, including http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geusg12kZFXCsAXGJXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB2bzBpdmkxBGNvbG8DZQRsA1dTMQRwb3MDNQRzZWMDc3IEdnRpZAM-/SIG=12ejtu2tn/EXP=1162357685/**http%3a//www.usatoday.com/news/world/2006-10-28-oaxaca_x.htm

It's got a Saturday date stamp on it, so it's the article I'm talking about.

I still can't find the quote, but it's not a big deal. As for the second amendment, the argument I made was not that I don't personally belive in guns (even though I don't). The argument I made was that the Constitution does not give American citzens the rights they are claiming to have today. If I have a revolver in my night-stand drawer, how is that supporting a "well regulated militia"? My personal feelings on the matter have no legal meaning. The Founding father's feelings on the matter back in 1789, as well as any interpretation of the second amendment agreed upon by the USSC, do matter. That was my argument. Also, the Constitution initially applied to only the federal government, and then the fourteenth amendment broadened it to state governments as well. The US Constitution is not relevant to local legislation, like that of San Francisco. That's why I don't understand Bush's desire to pass a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. That would not make San Francisco's laws null and void. But that's a seperate issue, which, thankfully, we agree upon.
